History of the Sport

Archery, from Latin arcus, is the art of thrusting arrows with a bow. Once used for hunting and combat, in the current days, archery is a competitive sport and recreational activity. The armies of ancient civilizations, especially the Assyrians, Armenians, Egyptians Persians, Parthians, Indians, Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese included archers in large numbers.  Asian history documents highly developed forms of archery. The Sanskrit term for archery, the Dhanurveda, refers to the Dhanus or bow. The Korean kingdom of Goguryeo, was famous for its archery regiment with exceptionally skilled archers.

Olympics

Archery debuted at the 1900 Summer Olympics and has been an event in 14 Olympiads. Eighty-three nations, with France making the most number of appearances at 11, have participated in the Olympic archery events. Korean women archers have hogged the limelight in the archery events for women since 1984, winning 14 out of 15 models. In team events, Korean men have shown might, with four gold medals out of seven, but they have not shined in the individual events. The World Archery Federation (WA; formerly FITA) governs the event. Recurve archery is the only discipline of archery featured at the Olympic Games. Archery is also an event at the Summer Paralympics.
