History

Athletic contests have prehistoric roots. Athletics events were illustrated in the Ancient Egyptian tombs in Saqqara, with sketches of running at the HebSed festival and the event of high jump marked in tombs dated to as early as 2250 B.C. There is also a record of an ancient Celtic festival called The Tailteann Games. This was in Ireland, established around 1800 B.C. and it was a thirty-day meet which listed running and stone-throwing in its sporting events.

At the very first Olympics event in 776 B.C., the only and original was ‘stadion’, which was a stadium-length running event. Later, throwing and jumping events within the ancient pentathlon was included. The Panhellenic Games, established 500 BC, also had athletic events.

The Cotswold Olimpick Games was a sports event that was celebrated in England in the 17th century, which featured athletics in the form of sledgehammer throwing contests. Revolutionary France had a national festival called L'Olympiade de la République which is seen as an early forerunner to the modern summer Olympic Games; this was in 1796-98. The star event here too was a running competition, but various ancient Greek disciplines were also held. This period also marks the introduction of the metric system into sports.

Athletics has been on the agenda of every Summer Olympics since the 1896 Summer Olympics, which is said to mark the evolution point of Olympics in its modern avatar. Now Althletics includes track and field events, road running events, and race-walking events. Cross country running was dropped after the 1924 Summer Olympics.

Here’s a list of events usually held under Athletics.
