Wrestling is an ancient combat sport that finds literary references as early as the Iliad by Homer and its odyssey across the ages has an interesting track. Cave drawings of France dated some 15,000 years ago also document wrestling. Sketches from ancient Egyptian and Babylonian art depict wrestlers doing much of what happens in the modern version of wrestling. The ancient Olympic Games of Greece passed on its wrestling sports to the ancient Romans, minus the brutality. Royal families across the globe continued to patronise wrestling as a sport in the Middle Ages. And the early settlers of America as well the Native Americans are said to have been fond of the sport.

Olympics
Wrestling was contested at the Summer Olympic Games since 708 BC. In 1896, wrestling became a focus of the Athens Games, and continued its limelight as an event in the Olympics of later years, except in the 1900 Summer Olympics. 1904 saw the introduction of freestyle wrestling and weight classes and 2004 saw women’s competition being introduced. In 2013, The IOC voted to exclude wrestling as an event from 2020 Olympics onwards, and later cancelled the decision. Now, wrestling is one of the two Olympics sports events, along with boxing, that still require participants to have amateur status to participate in the Olympics.
