Cycling
The event cycling involves the use of bicycles for transport or for sport. And it’s not just two-wheelers that are involved here; there are unicycles, tricycles, quadracycles, and human-powered vehicles (HPVs).
Bicycles are a 19th century phenomenon, and there are said to be one billion of these wheels about worldwide. Cycles are effective, efficient and convenient mode of transport for short distances.
History
With the introduction of bicycles, there were competitions too, including those involving the early boneshaker model bicycles. In the 1890s, called the "Golden Age of Cycling", events of cycling competitions happened across Europe, the U.S. and Japan. Once, a velodrome was a must in every major city in the US track racing events, but after mid-20th century cycling has turned into a minority sport in the US. But Europe still treats it with respect especially in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Italy and Spain. The Tour de France is a major racing event which continues attracting crowds since its inception in 1903.
There are various racing formats for cycling in both individual and team competitions. The race could be a one-day road race, criterium, as also time trial to multi-stage events like the Tour de France and similar events which make up the Grand Tours of cycling. In Velodromes, track bicycles are used for track cycling, while in outdoor terrains, cyclo-cross races are held. This outdoor could be pavements, grass, or mud. Cyclocross races feature man-made hurdles which riders either jump over or alight and walk over. Time trial races, require a rider to finish a distance against the clock, this can be single rider or team event. In the recent decade, mountain bike racing is popular over the glopbe, and is an Olympic event.
Olympics
Cycling has been an event at all the Olympics Games held since the 1896 Summer Olympics, where there was a road race and five track events. Women's cycling came in at the 1984 Summer Olympics as a road race, and track events for women have been held since the 1988 Olympics.
