Hockey
Hockey is a team sport where two teams use a hockey stick and try to manoeuvre a ball or a puck into the opponent's goal play.
History
Many cultures have documented games which were played with a ball and a curved stick. Egypt in 4000 BC, Ireland in 1272 BC, Ancient Greece in 600 BC etc. The word hockey, but, is first recorded in use in a proclamation by King Edward III of England 1363, where certain games are banned. In the northern part of the U.S. and Canada, the cold weather brought on ice hockey, as against field hockey in warmer climes.
Olympics
The 1908 London Olympics first saw men’s hockey as an event. But soon, in 1924 at Paris, the game was removed because of a lack of structure that was required of an international sporting event. In 1928, at Amsterdam, hockey regained its status.
From 1928 to 1964, India won the men’s gold seven times, followed by Pakistan winning thrice and coming second thrice from 1956 to 1984. In Moscow in 1980, women’s hockey came up for the first time.
