Shooting
In shooting as a competitive sport, firearms and air guns are used to test proficiencies in accuracy and speed. The categories are by the type of firearm, targets, and distances at which the targets are shot from.
History
The National Rifle Association of America was formed in 1871 when concerns over poor marksmanship during the American Civil War worried the veteran Union officers. The association was formed for promoting and encouraging rifle shooting on a "scientific" basis. In 1872, a site was purchased for building a rifle range. The range christened Creedmoor opened in 1872, and became the site of the first National Matches.
Olympics
The founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin, was also a French pistol champion and took part in these early competitions. Perhaps this was why five shooting events were included in the 1896 Olympics. The 2004 Olympics featured three shooting disciplines (rifle, pistol, and shotgun) where athletes vied for 51 medals in 10 men's and 7 women's events.
The Olympic Games is the greatest podium for shooting as a sport.
