History of the sport
Volleyball, originally called mintonette, was created by combining elements of tennis and handball. The Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), was founded in 1947, and the first World Championships were held in 1949 for men and 1952 for women. Two teams of six players each compete in a match. The teams are separated by a net and the players score points by hitting the ball on to the other team’s court. The game is usually played using hands or arms, but other parts of the body can also be used for striking.
Olympics
Voleyball was introduced as a demonstration event at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. The competition in its current form began with the 1972 Olympics.
